People in Los Angeles ask what is the New Ground project? New Ground is an independent group of people who put their efforts to enhance the trust between Jews and Muslims in Los Angeles. This project was started in 2006 in the backdrop of growing tension and trust deficit between Jews and Muslims overthere. The main leaders of its foundation include Malka Fenyvesi and Aziza Hasan. New Ground group intends to support a social change and a healthy relation between these two groups with coordinated activities. New Ground has been fiscally sponsored by various community leaders so that it can lead a better transformation process. As part of its activities the Muslim Public Affairs Council and Progressive Jewish Alliance merged together in order to create a fellowship programme for their emerging leaders. This can enable the fellows to improve their knowledge and skills that are required to transform Muslim-Jewish relations in Los Angeles. Some people will be selected from each of the community and they will be imparted with those skills and knowledge to help change their communities in a cordial manner. New Ground has launched a fellowship programme for Muslims and Jews belonging to the Culver City Mosque and Beverly Hills synagogue. These two institutions were at the forefront to laid the foundation in enhancing relationship between Muslims and Jews in Los Angeles in last three years.

To understand more about the New Gound project, it is necessary to highlight some of their work. New Ground staffs conducted an interfaith youth corpse conference called ”Crossing the Faith line” in Chicago in October,2007. It was on the basis of experience they gained through New Ground fellowship programme. In 2008-09 New Ground cooperated with the University of Southern California to be co-sponsored and co-created at Jewish-Muslim film series.

New Gound project has been housed at the City of Lose Angeles Human Relations Commission. Its activities has reached the nook and corner of Los Angeles within a short period of time. It has been working through partnerships, Programming, and Consulting with other institutions. Some of the partners include: American Jewish Committee(AJC), American Muslim Professionals (AMP), American Jewish University(AJU),Hebrew Union college,J-Q Internationals, New Horizons Day Scholl, and the list goes on. From 2010 onwards New Ground began its activities to become an independent organisation and it has been recieving fiscal sponsorship from community partners due to the foundation laid by parent organisations.

New Ground group ofcourse needs finance for its activities. It is grateful for the financial contributions made by several Institutions. Some of those institutions that contribute fund to the New Ground programmes include: Wally and Suzy marks, Muslim Public Affairs council, Rosenthal Charitable Trust, The City of Los Angeles Human Relations Commissions, etc. At present New Ground is working towards expanding its programmes and offerings by relaunching its original fellowship programmes. Moreover, New Ground arranges public events, fellowship and alumni programmes, workshops and consultations that can open the doors of opportunities for Jews, Muslims and the public to work together and strengthen their mutual ties.

The Jewish-Islamic relations started way back in tn the 7th century, with the commencement and spread of Islam faith in the Arabian peninsula. The two faiths shared similar values, principles and guidelines and importantly Islam incorporated much of the Jewish history into its believes. For example Moses who ranks among the key prophets of Judaism, is as well regarded as an important prophet in the Islamic faith. His is not only a prophet but also a God’s messenger according to Islam. Many such examples linking Islam to Jewish or Judaism exists.

However, the Middle East crisis and the fight over ownership and the demarcation of the land of Israel, elicited sore relationship between these two groups. The crisis was not only confined to the Middle East but other parts of the worlds where the population of these two groups was quite considerable. North America – the most cosmopolitan continent in the world, could not avert being part of this crisis. The situation was to be made worse by the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack. To help mitigate the growing tension between Islam and other religious groups in North America, a number of Muslims and Jewish organizations we set up. NewGround is one such organisation.

The organization began in 2006 with a specific goal to respond and moderate the growing tension as well mistrust between the Muslims and the Jews in Los Angeles. In addition, NewGround’s mandate includes creation of a national model not only for productive engagement and healthy relationship between the two groups but also for social change between the American Jews and Muslims. As such, the organization’s goals, vision, mission and values are designed to meet this key objectives. NewGround’s Vision is to create a world in which the mutual suspicion between Jews and Muslims is replaced with trust and partnership. The pliability of Jewish-Muslim relations in the US will attest to be stronger than disagreements between communities serving as a model of what would be regarded as a successful pluralistic civic engagement in a growing diverse society.

On the other hand the mission of this group is to equip members of both Muslim and Jewish communities with the resources, skills and other material that are essential in improving relationship as well as cooperation in areas of shared interests and concerns. This is done through such programs as young professionals fellowship, consulting and programming. It aims to have an impact to a wide range of Jewish and Muslim leaders both with liberal and conservative views. The organization has developed a set of values to help achieve its goals. Key among them are; Curiosity over Assumption; where the drive to ask questions and to seek for clarification ought to supersede that of making premature and uninformed decisions and conclusions. The mission, vision and values of the new ground project can be sum up in few words; to strengthen the relationship between American Muslim and Jewish for peaceful and prosperous world. Relationship before politics local over international- facing the Palestinian-Israeli conflict head on while appreciating that organization’s impact is stronger locally than internationally. Safe open space- aiming to create a conducive atmosphere in which everyone is respected and valued for sharing his or her perspectives. Nimble and Responsive plurality over parity; appreciating diversity and thus exploring opportunities within those diversities.

There are various Muslim groups in America and they have contributed much to the American culture. Different traditions exist among the Muslim communities here. Majority of the Muslims belong to the Sunni community. Many of the Muslims in the US adhere to different global movements within Islam. Though in the early periods the Muslims supported the Republican Party, now they mostly support the Democratic Party.

Jews were found in United States of America from the seventeenth century. The first group of Jews who were found in the US was Ashkenazi Jews who emigrated from Central and Eastern Europe and were very less in number. They were denied the right to vote. Later by 1790s they achieved political equality by becoming active in all the public affairs. In 1880s Jew immigrated to the United States in large numbers. By the twentieth century the Jews built many synagogues and also territorial associations for them and over time Jews became an integral part of American life.

After the shocking attacks on the world trade center on the 11th of September 2001, a number of crimes against the Muslims were reported. Many of theses attacks were fatal while the others ranged from discrimination and destruction of properties and violent threats and assaults and grievous hurts. Hence after the 9/11 attacks the Muslims in US had bad times. They were viewed as terrorists and were stereotyped. The Muslims in US were concerned about the public’s ignorance about Islam.

From long ago itself Muslims had a dislike for the Jews and On the other hand the Jews disliked the Muslims. The holy book of Muslims the Qur’an contains some instructions to the Muslims which are contradictory to the Jews. Qur’an has at times instructed the Muslims to love the Jews as brothers but at certain other instances instructed to attack the Jews as they refuse to convert to Islam. All this hostility has its roots in the scriptures of their religious books. Though the enmity started a long way back the hostility had some modern reasons too. The United Nations gave some land to the Jews and that land was occupied by the Muslims before. So the Muslims protested and attacked Israel which is the land of Jews.

It is unfortunate that Islam is the most controversial religion or it can be told that it is the most misunderstood religion of the world. The necessity of ending these hostilities between the Muslim and Jew brothers has been understood by the US and it has turned out to be a major concern. Attempts are being made to bridge the misunderstandings between the Muslims and the Jews. Many organizations are working with this intention. Iranian President Had recently made a demand fro an international dialogue between Jews and Muslims.

Jewish organizations in the US have been trying to find common partners among the Muslim organizations and to put an end to the hostilities among the two groups. Steps have been taken over the past few decades to bring into light the common religious and the cultural heritages of the two religions. From as early as in the 1960s Jews and Muslims had developed contacts. By the 1980s the Muslim groups won in establishing a political arena and found similar Jewish groups and developed relations among them. Even the Jews did not hesitate to go to mosques and the Muslims liked to go to synagogues to have icebreaker discussions. Hence we can dream that the Jews and Muslims will work together for peace in the coming days.

The Jewish history- Just what does it entail? The Jewish history points to the history of the Jews. This mainly focuses on their cultures, beliefs and religion and the way they have over the year developed and interacted with other people, cultures and religions as well. The history of the Jews dates back well over 4000 years ago. Over all those years, the Jewish people have transformed greatly. Their way of living has also been greatly transformed. The 20th century seems to have transformed the Jewish culture and religion in a greater scale. It is the time period where the aspects of American Jewish came into play. America at that time had and still has the third largest population of Jews. The practice of immigration is what has led to the increase in the number of Jews in America. In the year 1900 almost 40 percent of the Jews in the country were actually new comers. Between the years 1900 and 1924 about 1.75 million jews trickled into America. Most of them originated from Europe. By 1930, the Jewish population in America stood at 3.5 percent of the total population.

The inflow of the Jews to America radically transformed the composition of the initial American Jewish. This later resulted in increased population of the Jews in the east coast region. Boston, one of the cities where few Jews lived is today like their hub. The coming of the Jews into America greatly transformed the life styles of the locals. They came in with much influence. This is evidenced by the inclusions of Jewish elements in aspects relating to socialism, tradition and nationalism in America. The influence of the Jews who hailed from East Europe is still much vivid in America. The descendants of the people here still hold on to the traditions they carried over from the farther land. The influence of the American Jewishry started taking much effect in 1914. This is at the time when the Jewish American community mobilized resources to as to assist victims in the European war. The World War 1 marked the end of the immigration of the Jews to America. Today America is in a state of consolidation on a stable platform. There are now many descendants of the Jewish community who view and recognize America as their only home. You would definitely notice the influence of the Jewish community today if you visited America. Synagogue centers, schools and many more social amenities have been developed to cater for the needs of the Jewish community here.

Stability is rising and the locals are now accepting the presence of the Jewish Americans in their territory. America is now a full metropolis. There have therefore been calls for communal unity owing to the increase in the number of inhabitants mainly in East coast America. In the most initial times, there have been scores of animosity and mistrust among the communities in America. One of the notable misunderstandings is between the Muslims and Jews living in America. In order to cool the temperatures caused by racial disparity, different organizations have been set up to bring up the importance of national cohesion. This is one of the functions of the NewGround Project. It has helped a lot in terms of restoring good relationships between the Jews and Muslims living in America.

America is a country that is racially and ethnically diverse. Many people view America as the country of golden opportunity or the land of milk and honey. This is one of the main reasons why different groups from all over the world migrated to America to try and have a shot at a better life. There is thus a need to harmonize the different ethnic groups living in America so as to promote peace. Jews and Muslims are some of the ethnic groups residing in the United States of America. The American Jews are American citizens who practice the Jewish faith and culture. They have been present in America as far back as the 17th century and are predominantly the Ashkenazi Jews. In early 1880s, the Jewish immigrants increased dramatically as a result of persecution in certain parts of Eastern Europe.

Muslims living in the United States of America are known to have migrated there between the 1880s and 1914 from the Ottoman Empire. They are one of the most racially diverse and religious group in the country. This is according to a 2009 poll by Gallup. African Americans compose about a quarter of the entire Muslim population. Despite them being the two most successful religious groups speaking in terms of wealth and education, they are still not considered “true Americans” by the rest of the majority in society and thus they often experience discrimination. This is one of the reasons that prompt them to conceal their religious identity. Both the Muslims and the Jews have similar practices such as avoiding consumption of pork and its products. This however, does not guarantee a good relationship between the two as would be expected since they live in a Christian dominated country. The reason behind this is due to being raised in a household or an environment of such mistrust to an extent of harboring hatred. There is a need to try and repair the relationship between the two groups so as to uphold peace and create harmony. It would serve them no good to war with each other. This would be a pure waste of time and resources. Every community or any society is made up different people from diverse backgrounds. The most important thing is to have respect for each and every person. Educating the mass as well as the children will serve a huge part in creating a harmonized society. The fact that one is a Jew and that the other is a Muslim does in no way make one less of a person. It is through diversity that beauty is created. Taking advantage of a different culture will also promote peace between the American Jews and the Muslims. Learn the positive from each ethnic group and finesse it to build a better society. Bringing together both the Jews and Muslims rather than treating them as two separate groups, will see them working together in peace and it will be ultimately for the good of the community at large. It is therefore up to each and every American Jew and Muslim to take it upon them to harmonize the different ethnic groups living in America.

The main Jewish communities in the United States were formed during the 17th century. The Jews who had established there before were mostly of Sephardic origin – the victims of Spanish persecution, for example. For the next 100 years, the immigration went slowly, with a significant increase at the end of the 18th century, when the victims of pogroms in Eastern Europe chose to start a new life instead of being victims of the permanent harassments and dangers. Gradually, they were joined by German Jews, richer and more integrated.

At the end of the 19th century, there were officially registered around 250,000 Jews and the number augmented substantially with the arrival of the Russian and Polish Jews. Most part of them was speaking Yiddish – a language developed during the 10th century by the communities living in the German lands – and was born in small rural communities.

Facing the new challenges

For many of them, the arrival in what they called sometimes “goldene medina” – “the country of gold” – represented a shock. The dangers of assimilation and secularization were big, due also to the lack of a proper religious system and a different mentality in comparison with the world they were living before. The literature of the time is plenty of characters facing the difficult choice of starting a new and better life while giving up the traditions and the religious practice. Little by little, the cultural definition of identity started to prevail allowing the development of the current rich repertoire of Jewish communities in America, embracing practically all the mainstreams of Judaism.

In the period between the end of the 19th century and 1924, almost 2 million Jews arrived in America. The communities went stronger and a proper institutional network of synagogues and schools was developed. In 1924, a National Quota was created in order to restrict immigration, a regulation that dramatically put in danger the lives of Jews who wanted to escape Nazi Germany.

Almost 500,000 Jews fought during the World War II, out of which 10,000 were giving their lives for the freedom of Europe.

Post-war developments

After Shoah, the world would never be the same. Many survivors settled in the US and contributed to the renewal of the communal life. The blessed memory of those who perished is commemorated with reverence as a reminder of what could happen when the individuals and the world remain indifferent and avoid taking stances.

New York remains one of the most important towns on the map of the Jewish life, but smaller or large communities, following the strict religious, reform or liberal mainstreams, were created on the whole territory of the United States. According to the statistics, around 1,750,000 Jews are living in the New York City. Other cities with a high concentration of Jewish communities are Miami, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Chicago, San Francisco and Boston.

The Jews supported the civil rights movement and all the measures aiming to create a better and inclusive society. The Jewish public intellectuals, writers and artists always played an important role in the American history and contributed significantly to the profile of the current society in the US.

Islam is one of the widespread monotheistic religions that exist in the world. It has its basis on the Qur’an, a book that is considered by its followers as the exact word of God. It is impossible to talk about the Islamic faith without mentioning the man who is known to be its founder, Muhammad. He is considered to be the last true Prophet of Allah. The Islamic faith began in Mecca. The Muslim version of their history states that the angel Gabriel appeared to a man known as Muhammad, born approximately AD 570-571. He hailed from the powerful tribe Quraish in Mekkah. His father, Abdullah, was a merchant who made caravan trips. He died soon after marrying Muhammad’s mother, Aminah.

Muhammad was left fatherless at birth. His mother also died leaving him an orphan at the tender age of six. As though he had not been through enough tragedy, his grandfather who had assumed the role of his guardian passed away when he was eight years old. It was his uncle, who took him in and raised him. Muhammad learnt the family business and became so successful that a wealthy widow known as Khadija, had him oversee her trading business. Impressed both by his skill and appearance, she proposed marriage to him. She was forty whilst he was twenty five when they tied the knot. They had six children together, four girls and two boys. The sons died at an early age. Being wealthy, he could afford leisure. He took trips into the desert and mountains. He frequented a cave at Mount Nur and it was whilst there, during Ramadan, a festival of pagans, that Gabriel first appeared to him. In the beginning, he only revealed to his family and close friends about the visitations but word quietly spread over the next three years. He was then instructed by Allah to condemn pagan acts and idolatry in Mekkah. Once he went public with this message, he faced a lot of opposition from those who saw his message as an economic threat.

Muhammad had quite a following, many of who died for their faith. Others fled to Ethiopia to escape persecution, but Muhammad went on undeterred. In the year 621, he made a call to a group of delegates in Medina who then made a covenant with him and declared themselves Muslims. The turning point in Islam occurred in 622 when a group of about seventy people pledged to protect Muhammad against all odds. They were also from Medina, which is also known as Madinah. Muslims in Mekkah were ordered to move to Medina and it became a Muslim society. Muhammad became a religious, military as well as a political leader. Under his guidance, Islam spread like a bushfire as tribes and cities were converted. Intimidation and force were the tactics used. Eight years later, Muhammad’s forces conquered Mekkah. All idols were destroyed and Kabah was made to be Allah’s place of worship. Muhammad died in the year 632 having left behind a religion and social order that is now dominant the world over. He was succeeded by his father-in-law Abu Bakr as the Kalifah, the prophet’s successor. The caliphate later turned into the Ottoman Empire. Islam is today a dominant religion in the world.

Welcome

NewGround is a joint PJA and MPAC program that engages diverse groups of Muslims and Jews in an innovative community-building process of intra- and inter- faith education and reflection, leadership training, and civic engagement. Scheduled to be launched in January 2007, this program utilizes a creative and dynamic new approach to Muslim-Jewish community-building, and is the result of extensive research of previous Muslim-Jewish dialogue efforts conducted in Los Angeles and throughout the country.

Equal Partnership – NewGround is an equal partnership between two community-based organizations (MPAC and PJA) with a similar mandate – fostering a strong sense of civic engagement in their respective communities. Past dialogue efforts in Los Angeles have either originated in one community or have reflected an imbalance in resources or institutional capacity. To avoid repeating this mistake, MPAC and PJA AFWG each have a full-time staff member planning and coordinating this program together each step of the way.

Intra-communal Reflection and Inter-communal Dialogue – Before engaging with one another, Jewish and Muslim participants will engage separately in intra-communal education and reflection in order to address issues that pose both opportunities and challenges for understanding the “other.” Issues will include ethnic and religious diversity as well as anti-Semitism and Islamophobia. Participants will then be prepared for the next stage of the process: meaningful interaction and honest discussion about issues of concern to both communities.

Civic Engagement – NewGround works to create a shared sense of civic engagement on issues affecting the City of Los Angeles. Each set of participants in NewGround will learn about and act on a joint issue of concern that reflects their traditions’ common commitment to social justice.

Sweeping Change – NewGround aims to create a sweeping change of attitude within the Muslim and Jewish communities, rather than solely among leadership. Through intensive learning, skills-training, and reflection, NewGround will build small groups of committed and trained individuals who will bring what they have learned to their larger communities. Hydroxatone NewGround will generate new Muslim-Jewish community-building leaders, with the expectation that alumni will act as trainers/facilitators for groups in coming years.

The Elephant(s) in the Room – The purpose of NewGround is to create an effective model for Muslim-Jewish interaction that neither ignores nor becomes hostage to the ever-shifting realities in the Middle East. NewGround will create innovative ways to approach the challenges in the Middle East, while acknowledging that each community maintains a diversity of perspectives and level of concern for these issues. The goal is to train Muslims and Jews to engage in open and frank dialogue on these issues with the goal of mutual understanding, not political conversion. To this end, NewGround will seek to share the astounding work of grassroots efforts in the Middle East that serve to foster mutual understanding and coexistence.

Benfits of ethnic groups working together in America

United we stand, divided we fall – these are only a few words but very powerful. They govern the benefits of people working together as one in order to achieve their goals and foster unity in a nation. America can be categorized as a diverse country. This is due to the fact that it has so many different people from different parts of the world residing in it. There are many immigrants and minority groups that reside there. All these people working together with the natives of America will only yield to peace and understanding. Since America has several ethnic groups, there is every reason for them to work together. Ethnic groups working together as a community have a lot of advantages and benefits to the people and the country at large. Many people have never sat down to reflect on this point.

There are many benefits of Ethnic groups working together in America. The first point on the list is that it will bring about peace and understanding between the various ethnic groups. When people work together, there is usually a sense of understanding that comes along with it. This gives them a chance to bond by working mutually and it will actually help one to understand why a certain community does what they do. It will bring people closer to one another thereby encouraging friendship between one another. A good example of two ethnic communities that have portrayed this humane gesture are the Jews and the Muslims of America. They saw that there is every need to come together in order to stop any kind of misunderstanding that was there between them. They have organized groups that have helped in preaching peace between them and this has actually worked very well.

The other advantage of ethnic groups working together in America is unity. This is based on the saying that unity is strength. If ethnic groups start working together, they will forever be united. All the conflicts that arise from the hatred of some ethnic groups will not be there. Conflicts bring about war and where there is war, there is no peace. People that are united do not have the time to start conflicting, they will only be focusing on those things that will help them grow and make their society be better than it was before.

Working together helps to avoid racial discrimination or ethnic racism. This is a very bad culture that has been reduced as ethnic communities work together. It has actually made some people to realize that we are all the same and that there is no person that is greater than the other. It helps people from different backgrounds come up with different ideologies that are going to help in taking them forward. If people allow racism to take over, then America will lag behind and the peace that is there will all go down the drain.

Ways that American communities can make ethnic minority groups feel welcome

The issue of integration of ethnic minority groups in a country has become a vital topic of discussion in America. Over the past years, America has recorded a large number of different ethnic groups coming from all over the world. Most of them largely find themselves in America for a variety of reasons. There are some that go there as students, others to work and others relocate there because of the vast opportunities available. Whatever the reason is, they should all be made to feel at home. This will enable them to feel comfortable and carry on with their duties very well without feeling any pressure or oppression. There are various ways American communities can make ethnic minority groups feel welcome. Some of them are going to be discussed below.

The first way of making them feel at home is by accommodating them. How can this be done? It is very simple. Do not make them feel as if they do not belong. In most cases, a minority group usually feels inferior and tends to withdraw from the rest of the community. In case you notice such an incident, it is appropriate that you go talk to that person and make them see the fact that America is their new home. In this way they will not feel left out and they will be able to make new friends.

Giving them job opportunities by employing them will make them feel welcome. Some of these people come to America to seek employment opportunities. A good welcome that they can be given is by offering them equal opportunities as the natives. Some people have the tendency of giving the American people jobs and leaving others out because of their minority status in a country. This can be a big mistake as many people from overseas have excellent skills that can be utilized by the local market whether it be sales people for resveratrol, tradespeople for flooring Garland or IT specialists for CRM software. By ensuring that Ethnic minority groups are “given a go” in the job market this will not render them jobless and they will be able to also start their lives very well adapted to the environment.

Involving them in communal projects can also serve them well in accommodating them. Involving them in this aspect ensures that you allow them to participate in communal projects or decision making processes in the society. It will allow their voices to be heard and their opinions responded to. Some of them normally have bright ideas that might help in moving the nation to greater heights. Some of them also have the capability of being sturdy leaders and some of them have the ability of being the change that the American people deserve.

The minority groups also deserve to have equal rights. They should be able to enjoy the same rights that everybody else is enjoying and be protected the same way the other people are being protected and be served just as the other people are being served, equally. They should not be discriminated upon racially. It is inevitable that anywhere you go you might find people that are being hated upon. Hatred will not yield peace, it will only foster cold war among the minority and the majority groups.

All humans being were created equal. Though we all have different affiliations it is important that everyone is accepted in America and made to feel at home.

The many different religious faiths of the American people

America is a land for all. Get into this country and you are assured of finding someone, from the “majority” group to the “minority”. People of all races, all tribes, people from all over the world and of all faiths. When you talk of Christians you find both the catholic and the protestants, and there are also other faiths such as the Jews- Judaism, and of course the Muslims.

The human race wants peace. Most importantly, in America we need peaceful co-existence between the Americans - not only Jews and Muslims but other religious groups too, for a peaceful and prosperous America. Through the years, there has always been a cloud of tension and mistrust between the American Jews and Muslims. Thus, the New Ground project came into creation with the aim of creating a national framework that will enhance and foster peaceful co-relations, participation in productive activities and social interaction between American Muslims and Jews. Six years since its inception, the New Ground project has developed to be an independent organization receiving sponsorship from several community partners with its headquarters at the Human Relations Commission, Los Angeles UPSA.

In America today, people of different religious backgrounds and beliefs live together. The challenge lies squarely with us to work together in order to build a society based on true values such as openness, mutual respect and trust. It basically means finding suitable ways for us to live and practice our faith and beliefs and allowing other people to exercise their religious beliefs too without discrimination. Each religion emphasizes the importance of healthy relations with others through compassion, honesty and kindness of spirit.

In view of the New Ground project’s vision that aims to eradicate the current cloud of suspicion and instill honesty and partnership among Muslims and Jews, the organization embarks on its mission of equipping American Muslims and Jews with the relevant relationship skills through the creation and introduction of fellowship programs for alumni and young professionals, public events, workshops and consultations in an effort to improve the relationship and teamwork between Muslims and Jews in their day to day lives.

It is imperative to show respect and goodwill when engaging with other human beings of different beliefs and practices. The law allows freedom of worship thus we should respect other people’s beliefs and practices. Respect of other people’s religions and beliefs calculates an understanding of their beliefs and the goodwill to allow them to practice their convictions. A person should not be judged based on their religion but on the basis of their character value. In case there are disagreements between different religious factions, we should ensure it does not end up being a conflict or resulting in violence. In the quest to strengthen the relations between Muslims and Jews, the New ground project stands firm behind the values that encourage sensitivity, openness and sincerity when dealing with matters of religion. Under the fellowship program, both listening and speaking are exercised for proper discussions. No person or religion is disparaged during the conversations and acknowledging the right of others not to agree on certain religious matters. By using young, talented and influential leaders from different religions in its work, the New Ground Project strives to establish a strong, long-term platform for continued mutual relations between American Muslims and Jews. It is in respect to God’s commandment that we as part of the human race are commanded to reach out to people of different faiths and practices amongst ourselves not in an effort to convert them, but to live and share beneficial things together in love and peace for the good our society. We have plenty of important things to learn from each other in spite of our religious differences. The New Ground project promotes projects and programs that engage American Muslims and Jews together in order to come up with ways that recognize their religious differences but promote their shared values.

A Brief History of the Jewish Faith

The 20th century was a century of immigration for the Jewish people and their faith. Vast numbers of Jews fled countries such as Russia, Poland and obviously Germany. The Jewish population in the UK increased by nearly a quarter of a million in just thirty years. The 20th century has seen a massive burden placed on the faith of all Jewish people. The creation of Israel was a watershed moment in the Jewish faith and one that has not been a solution for all the followers of Judaism.

The Jewish faith has seen a great amount of change in the 20th century. The fleeing of persecution has led to strains being placed on the Jewish faith and its followers. The Jewish faith has undergone fundamental changes in its make up as it has established itself in new communities.

Today, there are three major Jewish faith movements or beliefs namely, Conservative, Reform and Orthodox ES. Many will also cite a fourth, the Reconstructionist movement though this has a smaller following than the three main movements. Orthodox and sometimes conservative Judaism are seen as more traditional beliefs whilst the Reform movement is viewed as being more liberal.

The orthodox belief is made up of several different groups and all are very similar in their beliefs. It includes the modern Orthodox movement who whilst retaining their observance of halakhah have integrated themselves into the modern society. The Orthodox movement is also made up of more ultra orthodox followers such as the Chasidim who dress more traditionally and tend to live separately within society. The differences between the groups who follow the Orthodox faith is hard for outsiders to understand. Most believe that Moses received the whole Torah from God at Mount Sinai. The whole Torah being both the written and oral Torah. They believe that the message of the Torah is complete and unchanged. Their faith believes that the word of the Torah is binding for all Jews but not for non Jews.

Reform Judaism differs in articles of faith. Reformists do not believe that the Torah was written by God nor do they believe in the following of the commandments but they do retain and observe the ethics of Judaism. Reform is the most liberal of the Jewish faith movements but it is more complicated than this and not necessarily true for all Reformist Jews.

The Conservative movement grew from tensions between followers of the Orthodox faith and the Reform movement. Similar to the beliefs of Orthodox Jews the movement accepts the principles of the halakhah but believes that the Law is flexible and can be changed to fit in with different cultures. There is usually a great deal of variation in Conservative movement synagogues but most are very traditional.

Orthodox Judaism is the only movement accepted in Israel but as in all faiths things and beliefs change or are modified. The Jewish faith has seen upheaval on a massive scale and the 20th century saw major changes in the outlook of Jews. The creation of the state of Israel as seen in the Jewish faith and beliefs again is placed in a delicate position. In which direction Israel, Judaism and its followers take in the 21st century remains to be seen but there is no faith that is perhaps more resilient to adversity.

Working together for repairing the world

America is a country with one of the highest concentrations of religious diversity and experiencing a high level of tolerance. In the territory of the United States of America you will find represented almost every religious denomination or faith group, big or small, new or old.

According to the official polls, almost 83% of Americans claim belonging to a religious denomination and around 40% declare they are regularly attending a religious service. This situation opens the gates for further evaluation of the possibilities of a long-term valuable inter-faith dialogue.

Constitutional guarantees:

The freedom of religion is guaranteed by the fundamental law. The first amendment of the US Constitution states: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.” As a group or as an individual, we are free to manifest our belief and to share our values with others.

Following the principle stated by J. J. Rousseau and the philosophers of the Enlightenment, “one person’s freedom ends where another persons freedom begins”. Thus, each group should use this right as a tool enabling dialogue and mutual respect.

The religious belief and trust is engraved on the bills we are operating with daily, a symbol that our richness is not only material, but also spiritual and each dollar we spend may be used for good deeds and helping those in need.

The basis for the inter-faith dialogue:

Despite the violent historical episodes of the past and, unfortunately, of the present, the religious background may constitute a proper basis for common understanding and dialogue. Each religion shares the same ideas of good and honesty, respect towards difference and human integrity.

Free will is the main element that we should take into consideration when addressing the issue of religious communality. We are born free to choose doing good deeds or not. At any moment of our lives, we are able to decide that we need to change our lives to find a new and better paradigm of understanding the world.

America as an example:

Due to its diversity and exposure to tolerance, America may turn into a good example of inter-faith dialogue. The high concentration of mixed marriages, for example, where parents maintain their faiths are revealing to the children a rich world of shared values among which mutual respect is one of the most important standards.

America can show the world that far from representing an impediment, the differences constitute a rich reservoir of ideas and inspiration for finding the best practices and solutions in order to make the world a better place for all of us, independently of the ways and languages inwhich we address our prayers. Hence, we need to fully use all the good practices existent at the level of the various religious communities existent in America nowadays.

The common language of love and kindness may be harder to learn, but once we learn it, it is almost impossible to forget.

Jews and Muslims in America working together

We have all been looking forward to that day when the Jews and Muslims in America start working together as a team. Finally, it has come to pass. America is a large country that has several ethnic groups residing in it. The Jews and the Muslims are among some of the ethnic groups that are in America. The climate of tension and the lack of trust that was there between them saw the need of them coming together to quell this tension down. It also helped in creating a healthy relationship between the Muslims and the Jews living in America. The peaceful negotiations also helped in bringing about a productive engagement and social change between the two communities.

Their mission of working together is to equip the Jews and the Muslims in America with the necessary resources, skills and the relationships that are needed in improving the Jewish-Muslim relations and the corporation of concerned issues that are shared. They widely do this through a fellowship of young people, consulting and public programming. Their interests impact many people from liberals and conservatives to organizational leaders.

The Jews and the Muslims in America working together have seen a number of productive things happen. They work together to achieve a number of things that have not been seen before in America. This humble act has seen positive changes experienced in America by helping in doing activities that bring about peace, giving back to the society and helping members of the community. They work together in a number of areas some of which we are going to see below.

The first area is in the education of communities and the public. This is whereby they go together to the universities that have escalating rhetorics on Jewish and Muslims relations. They do this by modeling the civil associations for students and offering them a paradigm. This is helpful because they take the skills learnt back to the mosques and synagogues and create opportunities for the Jews and Muslims to understand each other through teaching and dialogue.

They also work together to fight discrimination. They organize many people to attend support rallies that empower people in fighting discrimination. They also conduct outdoor teachings on the negative effects of discrimination together in a bid to make people see that all communities and ethnic groups should work together in order to promote peace and understanding.

Some Jews and Muslims come together to organize Muslim-Jewish festivals. They engage the people in universities mostly who have upcoming talent in the movie industry. They help in promoting them and also coming up with features that promote peace between them. The feature creates awareness of the need of peace between these two societies in any part of the world.

They have also involved themselves in doing a number of community projects and services together. They have built houses for the needy and helped them to meet their points of need. These are some of the ways in which the Jews and the Muslims work together to bring peace and understanding between their communities.
